Women’s Film Festival/House of Women’s Film

The Women’s Film Festival/House of Women’s Film is a unique event celebrating the diverse and powerful voices of female directors from Europe. The festival began on November 25, 2023, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. It features monthly screenings and discussions on topics related to women, art, human rights, and social justice. Inspired by the global movement One Billion Rising, the festival aims to end violence against women and girls through art, protest, rebellion, and solidarity.

Danijela Stanojević, the artistic director and producer of the festival, is also known for her work as a journalist and writer. She has been actively involved in promoting women’s rights and addressing issues such as institutional violence and gender-based violence. Her film “Ustanak za Slobodu (Uprising for Freedom)” documents events related to the One Billion Rising movement in Zagreb.

Entrance to all festival events is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. The festival aims to be an open house for film, a safe space for creativity, and a platform for examining the role of women in cinema. The opening event took place at Urania – Space of Creation in Zagreb, featuring a panel discussion on institutional violence and a screening of the film “Custody” (Jusqu’à la garde), a French drama about family violence.

The Women’s Film Festival is not just about celebrating the art of cinema; it’s also about making a powerful statement. This year, the festival organized a poignant event at Bundek, where participants planted trees to symbolically commemorate the 400 women who have tragically lost their lives to partner violence over the past 20 years. This act of remembrance serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic violence and the need for continued efforts to combat it.

By planting these trees, we aim to create a living memorial that will grow and flourish, much like our commitment to ending violence against women. Each tree stands as a testament to the lives lost and a call to action for a safer future for all women.
